Bulbs should be planted at a depth of 5 inches.
Mid August to early October is the planting season.
In general the planting distance apart should be at least twice the distance of the size of the bulb, to allow for development of offsets. Daffodils can be planted in clumps at about 2 inches apart. Clumps of at least twenty bulbs give the best result. Allow more space if daffodils are being left to naturalise.
Bulbs need phosphate and potash for good flower and root formation but do not need nitrogen.
To get the best from the bulbs, let the foliage die back naturally after flowering. Do not tie the leaves into a knot as this will reduce the food generation by photosynthesis within the bulb, and therefore its ability to bloom in the next year.
If bulbs are planted in grass (on verges etc) the grass can be mown at the end of May if early varieties are selected.
